To run an operation such as East Holton Driving Centre is both
costly and labour intensive. Without the support of the community
and our volunteer helpers we could not provide this wonderful
service to our many disabled people. We try to encourage all our
disabled drivers to achieve their personal goals.
With every drive out we require 4 escorts
on bicycles (or electric buggies) for a wheelchair user, and 3
escorts for an ambulant person.
If you have a few hours to spare each week (or even at odd times
throughout the month), do consider coming along to see what we
do. You don't have to be 'horsey', you just need to have plenty
of enthusiasm and a willingness to help.
No knowledge is necessary. Training will be given and you will
become part of a friendly and supportive team. Each session is
overseen by a qualified RDA instructor and some helpers go on
to become instructors themselves.
For participants in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, time
spent helping with RDA on a regular basis qualifies for the Service
element of the award.
Students planning a career in the caring professions will find
that experience as an RDA helper is highly valued by admissions
tutors and potential employers.
We also offer the opportunity for helpers to learn to drive, teach
and encourage our clients; it is important that everyone who helps
gets some personal enjoyment from their activities - it must never
seem like a 'duty to disabled people'. For some it may be handling
horses, or cycling in the fresh air, or learning to drive a horse
& carriage, or just social inter-action.
The people you meet while at East Holton
Driving Centre are, like you, caring and compassionate individuals
with a love of animals and their fellow people.
All that we ask is that you possess a pair
of sensible boots and a good sense of humour! You don't have to
be mad to work with us, but it helps!!
New helpers are asked to complete an enrolment form and will be
asked to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau check in line with
RDA national policy.
Join us today and start:
* Making new friends
* Learning new skills
* Living a healthier lifestyle
* Having fun with like-minded people.
Any assistance is appreciated, whether it
is assisting with the horses and driving, yard work and equipment
maintenance, or liaison and fund raising.
